Tomintoul

Tomintoul Distillery was built in the village of the same name in 1964 and at a height of 345m above sea level it is one of Scotland’s highest. It is said that the purity of the water and the clean air at such a high altitude contribute to the smoothness of the malt. In the 1980s it was bought by one of the biggest and most diverse conglomerates in the UK at the time – Lonrho – which had interests in mining, agriculture, newspapers, hotels and engineering as well as wine and spirits. It lies in beautiful surrounds not far from Glenlivet although the distillery itself is not the most attractive.
